Chip Sensitivity (dBm): The Most Critical Parameter

Chip sensitivity (expressed in dBm) indicates the minimum RF power the chip must receive from the reader antenna to wake up and backscatter its signal.

Because dBm values are negative, a lower (more negative) number indicates superior sensitivity. For instance, an IC with -24 dBm sensitivity (like Impinj M730 or NXP UCODE 9) is significantly more sensitive than a legacy -20 dBm chip.

i

La Legge del Raddoppio RF

RF Rule of Thumb: Every 3 dB improvement in sensitivity doubles the power efficiency of the chip and translates into a 30-40% increase in read range at equivalent antenna gain!

Memory Bank Architecture (Gen2 / ISO 18000-6C)

00

Bank 00 — Reserved Memory

Houses 32-bit passwords: Kill Password (to permanently silence the tag) and Access Password (to lock memory banks against unauthorized writes).

01

Bank 01 — EPC (Electronic Product Code)

The memory bank read most rapidly during mass inventory scans. Typically 96 or 128 bits. Stores the product identifier (such as GS1 SGTIN-96).

10

Bank 10 — TID (Tag Identifier)

Globally unique silicon serial number factory-encoded by the chip manufacturer (typically 96 bits with 48 or 64 bits of unalterable unique serial).

11

Bank 11 — User Memory

Optional user-accessible memory (from 0 bits up to 2048 bits). Essential for decentralized data logging directly on the asset without central database lookups.

Leading IC Manufacturers Compared

Impinj (Monza, M700, and M800 series)

The global pioneer in RAIN RFID. The M700 (M730/M750) and next-gen M800 (M830/M850) series set the industry benchmark for sensitivity (-24.0 / -24.5 dBm) and speed, backed by AutoTune dynamic impedance matching technology.

NXP Semiconductors (UCODE series)

Global semiconductor powerhouse. The UCODE 9 and 9XE line delivers top-tier -24 dBm performance with Brand Identifier. UCODE 7xm provides massive memory (up to 2 kbits) for aerospace and automotive, while UCODE DNA features hardware AES-128 cryptographic authentication.

Alien Technology (Higgs series)

Early pioneer of passive RFID. Higgs-3 and Higgs-9 chips are renowned for generous user memory allocations and proven durability in manufacturing and supply chain operations.

EM Microelectronic (Dual-Frequency UHF + NFC)

Pioneers in hybrid dual-frequency chips (EM4423, EM4425). They bridge industrial RAIN RFID pallet-level logistics with consumer-facing one-touch NFC smartphone interactions.
